Not Much More than a Whisper

<Crossposted at [redacted] and DailyKos>

Good afternoon everyone!

John McCain has made a mistake.  I understand that the conventional wisdom was that if he waited to announce his Vice Presidential pick after the Democratic convention he'd be able to steal their thunder and, perhaps, turn some voters his way.  Folks, that bit of reasoning will turn out to have been incorrect.

Barack Obama managed to control several news cycles by building up enthusiasm for his VP selection.  Yes, some folks were offended.  However, everyone was talking about who he might pick.  Wall to wall coverage, and frankly wall to wall discussion in my own life.

Hillary Clinton stole the show last night, and no one deserves it more.  Joe Biden and Bill Clinton will have an incredible night tonight.  Barack Obama will bring down the house on Thursday.  Fine, we got off to a slow start.  However, this convention is rocking and rolling and this groove ain't nearly done.

So McCain's going to announce his pick on Friday?  There has been near as no mention of this process in the press.  He has only a few days, should he choose to delay, in order to build up some suspense.  His feints towards picking a pro-choice candidate have gotten him some attention, but frankly its been mostly negative from his base.  I don't know a single person in the real world who would go from voting Obama, or undecided, to McCain because Joe Lieberman is on the ticket.  Not one.  While I'm sure such people exist, I expect they couldn't fill up more than a bus or two.

John McCain can only generate good and heavy coverage by making a dangerous pick like Lieberman, Hutchinson, Whitman, or perhaps Ridge.  He won't do any of those.  He can't.  The John McCain of 2000 probably would have, but John McCain has shown a complete lack of spine in dealing with his base ever since he smacked down that state party for using Barack's middle name.  That was the last gasp of the "maverick" John McCain.  He'll pick Romney, Pawlenty, Portman, or someone similarly suitable to his conservative base.  He lacks the gumption to do anything else.

So I suspect he'll pick a boring running mate with nearly no build-up, build-up that we've made impossible.  We've been shouting Joe Biden's name, and the press has been trumpeting him for the most part.  John McCain just won't get that level of coverage or interest.  And frankly given the fact that John McCain has been willing to try to steal our thunder during the convention by appearing on Leno, I think it's only fair that Barack and Joe go out of their way to grab all the press they can during the RNC.

We'll shout triumphantly whilst they whisper, huddled in corners, hoping they can somehow eke this one out.

Rec'd.  This is the unity and excitement that  Hillary delivered last night.  Feels like '92 to me!

And remember, just because the GOP owned newz corps won't trumpet the distrust and dislike of McBush among his own Republicans, that doesn't mean it isn't real.

Re: Not Much More than a Whisper (2.00 / 1)

I've managed to correctly predict 3 of the 4 finishers so far.

I think Pawlenty is the R VP choice. MN has a strong history of voting presidential D, and we where the long (state) holdout in '84. I think the R's want to symbolically crush that, and they want a Midwesterner, and the convention is in his State.

I don't think Pawlenty has much of a chance against Biden in the debates, and will be a pretty milquetoast choice, but they don't have much depth to chose from.

(personally I hope it is Mittens, or even better Lieberman)

Too bad, for them (2.00 / 1)

That Bobby Jindal isn't five years older, with another term as governor under his belt.  He'd be the guy.

Watch out for Jindal.  He'll be on our radar again down the line.  For reals.

Could be... (2.00 / 1)

unless the almost inevitable culture of how LA does politics catches up to him.

Unless (none / 0)

he picks a truly news-breaking candidate - a woman for example, a democrat for example.  In that case it would be lights out brilliant.

Re: Unless (none / 0)

KBH is the only sane one of those for him, though.

Re: Unless (none / 0)

Unless it's Palin, but if he didn't pick Bobby Jindal because of experience, he damn sure won't pick Sarah Palin.

But I'm not that concerned by his other choices like Meg Whitman. Supposedly, he's making this decision on his own, and that's great for us, since his only friends tend to be other "incorruptible" corrupt politicians.

Re: Unless (2.00 / 1)

Palin just had a kid that's mentally disabled.  As in, just had.  I respect her for having the kid and taking it seriously, so I'm not digging at her in any way here.  That said, I have a hard time seeing her campaign hard with that situation.

Re: Unless (2.00 / 1)

I think she realizes that she can do more for Alaska by maintaining good relationships now with whoever takes the White House, too. It's a bit of a win-win situation for her if she stays out of it.

If McCain wins, she'll still be a preeminent voice in his newfound interest in opening up ANWR and a spotlight VP candidate in 2012 (because I don't think McCain will be serving 2 terms, whether he thinks so now or not). If Obama wins, she becomes the "what if" nominee, gets to shore up bipartisan credentials, then makes another run after she's had more experience.

Re: Unless (none / 0)

She also gets credit for saying she was pleased with Obama's energy plan, which did have substantial benefit for Alaska. That's good for her in-state and won't hurt Alaska-White House relations with Obama in there.

If he picks a newz breaking VP who alienates his own already disaffected base it won't be so brilliant.

They honestly respect him, yes.  However, he's pro-choice and otherwise liberal on pretty much every major issue.

He's a non-starter.  God, I'd love it if he picked him.

If the fundies accept a pro-choice Jew I'll be stunned.

Re: Watch them accept a Mormon (none / 0)

I'm not convinced they will. Not only do the fundies think he worships the devil, he was also pro-choice as governor of MA. Hell, the guy had all the money in the world and not only lost to McOld, he even lost to Huckleberry.

Wrong.  Limbaugh just said Lieberman's a "fine man" just that he can't accept him as VP.

Re: I think the thugs love (2.00 / 1)

Then it might be him.

A week ago he threatened civil war if McCain picked a pro-choice candidate.

I wonder if that is a clue, a big fucking clue?

Worse for him.... (2.00 / 1)

Its on his 72nd birthday. His birthday, being the oldest nominee ever, might overshadow his choice.

Re: Worse for him.... (2.00 / 1)

I'm guessing they chose his birthday to make the announcement in order to overshadow his age.

Re: Not Much More than a Whisper (2.00 / 1)

We've really got to steal their show. We can't rely on the fact that they're all dull as dishwater. When Giuliani is the speaker, remind everyone of his dismal support for firefighters and emergency workers in 9/11. When Cindy McCain is the speaker, get someone to bring up the egregious, wildly unnecessary, lie about Mother Theresa and her wild fortune that got greater because the preeminent American beer company was sold overseas. If Romney is the nominee, remind everyone that he is a liar on abortion. If Pawlenty is the nominee, remind everyone that he willingly wore a mullet for years.

But we gotta get on top of this. They came at us with a knife this week, we have to take a sledgehammer to their knees.

"Crossposted at redacted"? (none / 0)

You're normally a smart poster, but please...  Either a search for the phrase "pick Romney, Pawlenty, Portman" will find "redacted" within a day or two, or "redacted" isn't on the visible web, and therefore doesn't matter.
